Time flies when you are having fun! This is certainly true in our classroom. Since our return from Spring break, we have been working hard and learning many things!
Language Arts
Last week, we were excited to share a Max and Ruby story called Max Takes the Train. We learned about many kinds of transportation with this story. Our amazing words were sidecar, tunnel, subway, plane ferryboat and jetway. We also focused on the color words yellow, blue and green. We continued working on blending sounds together to read words. We also reviewed fantasy and realism in stories.
This week, we shared a story called Mayday, Mayday! This was about transportation used for emergencies. We learned the amazing words, rescue, pilot, yacht, sailor, mechanic and shimmering. We focused on cause and effect with this story.
This week, we also focused on different kinds of sentences. We reviewed the different kinds of punctuation and when to use each one.
We used shapes to create our own kinds of transportation after reading these stories.
We practiced rhyming with some fun stories. We chose rhyming pairs from these stories and highlighted the rhyming chunk. We also practiced our sentence writing when we wrote about things to do on a rainy day. We decorated umbrellas to go with this project.
High Frequency Words
We worked on the words where, what, come and said. Please continue to practice all your words every night!
Earth Day
We read stories about taking care of our Earth, called Our Class Goes Green and Where Does the Garbage Go? We sorted materials to be recycled, shared a recycling story from Starfall.com, wrote about how to care for the Earth and made posters to remind us to care for our wonderful planet. Please send in your cans to help with our recycling project. The proceeds will be used to adopt an animal at the zoo.
Math
In math, we began our number scrolls. We are writing numbers as high as we can go. We have many students who are past 100! We also worked on naming numbers in different ways. We learned a fun “teddy bears on the bed” activity to work on this skill. We practiced putting numbers in order from least to greatest or greatest to least. We have also been working on place value and making numbers with tens and ones. We continue to work on addition and subtraction number sentences. Please practice this concept at home. Give your child simple problems to solve such as, “I have 3 cookies and you have 2. How many do we have altogether?”
Thank You
Thank you so much for participating in our pennies for pasta collection. We were very proud of all the students who brought in their banks. The money will definitely be used for a good cause!
Reading Practice at Home
Please continue reading the stories that we send home each Friday. These are an important way to help your child practice sound blending and sight word reading. Also, please practice the list of High Frequency words that were sent home in report cards. They should be “sight words” which means they are read without hesitation! They are very important in helping your child become a fluent reader. Memory is a fun way to practice these words. You can make two sets of flashcards for each word. Lay all of the words face down on the table and take turns flipping two cards and reading the words out loud. If you get a match, you can keep the pair. The person with the most cards wins the game!
Fun Math
We will continue attaching fun math activities to your newsletters. These activities are from our Everyday Math program and are a fun way to spend time with your family and practice math skills. These are yours to keep and do not have to be turned in.
