WHAT A NEW FIRST GRADER NEEDS TO KNOW

A First Grade child should be able to:

Write his/her first and last name.

Recognize all of the letters of the alphabet.

Know the sounds of all of the letters.

Form letters and numerals correctly.

Read the basic color words.

Read the number words one through ten.

Write the numerals 1 through 20 correctly.

Know how to tie his/her shoes.

Manipulate a variety of materials correctly.

(Crayons, pencils scissors, glue)

Listen to and follow directions.

Read and recognize required vocabulary words

introduced in kindergarten.  These words must be

mastered to be successful in First Grade.
