1.   Attention All A.R. Readers…

MI: Interpersonal

 Read an A.R. book about the ocean.  Write a 2-sentence summary about the book and share it with your team.  When your summary is complete, take an A.R. test.  If you don't have A.R., take this quiz after you read the book The Magic School Bus on the Ocean Floor by Joanna Cole.

 2.  Express Yourself

MI: Musical/Rhythmic; Naturalist; Interpersonal

 Choose a topic and write a haiku, rap or song and perform it in front of the class.  Your teacher prior to your presentation must approve the haiku or song.  Some suggestions include an ocean animal, oceanography, or currents. The web site below will give the exact guidelines needed in writing a haiku.  Use the graphic organizer to help you.  You will be graded using this rubric.

 3.  Build-a-Boat (home activity)

 Choosing material from home, construct a boat that you think will be able to rescue animals.  Use the guidelines from Emergency 911!.  Bring in the boat you made and have your teacher test it.

 4.   Captain, We Have a Problem… (home activity)

MI: Logical/Mathematical

 Create a Morse code system that you would be able to use to signal ships of a disaster on the water.  Your Morse code must include a chart explaining how it works.  You should know that the Morse code system that you create will be used by all ships make it very easy to understand. You may use the web site below for examples of Morse code.

 5.      A Tale of a Whale

MI: Logical/Mathematical

Use the lengths of whale species to help understand basic math concepts.  Use the web site below to learn about the different lengths of whales as well as why their lengths are important.  Construct a bar graph with the different lengths of whales.  Make sure to properly label the bar graph.

 6.       Ocean Occupations

Find out more about one of the following ocean related occupations and visit the web site http://oceanlink.island.net/ask/answerscar.html to learn more about the ocean occupation you are interested in.  Report your findings to the class or write a short report titled, “A Week in the Life of a ______________.”   Include in your report/presentation how you think this job might change in the future.  Use this graphic organizer to help you organize your research.  Also you should send an email to a scientist in the ocean career of your choice stating what your project is about and ask them a question regarding the career you are interested in.  Be sure to print out your email and stick it in your portfolio.  You will be graded on this using this rubric.

7.        I Can't See You...

Did you know that animals sometimes survive in it's environment by using help from other animals or plants?  Visit the web sites below showing what symbiosis is.  Then, create a chart showing how symbiosis is used in relation to animals and plants in it's environment.  Then write at least two sentences explaining in words how the organisms use symbiosis in relation to the picture.

9.      Oil Schmoil

Read the book Oil Spill! by Melvin Berger to learn how oil spills are contained once they happen as well as to find out how to prevent them from happening.  What do you think about how this?  What do you think should be done to help?  Write an email to Exxon Valdez stating the dangers of oil spills and preventative measures that could be taken to stop any future spills.  Be sure to make a copy of this email for yourself to put in your portfolio.

10.        Do You See What I See?

12.            Ready, Set, ...Range, Median, & Mode!

There are many different types of animals that are in the ocean.  Their sizes are all very different.  The biggest ocean creature could be the size of at least a basketball court while the smallest ocean creature could be as small as a pin's head.  Complete the worksheet to find out the huge span of size differences that can be encountered in the ocean.

Have you ever used Microsoft Word before?  It is a program that is used in the real world for word processing.  To become familiar with Microsoft Word, first you need to print out these directions.  After they are printed out, start up Microsoft Word to begin!

16.                  Overlapping Oceans

Are oceans and lakes the same?  If not, what is different about them?  Using the information you already know about lakes and oceans, fill out the Venn Diagram to compare them.
